ABOUT EMF
EMF Carnations in Ethiopia since 2004
Since 2004, EMF has been producing Carnations in Ethiopia, East Africa. Ethiopia consists for a large part of a volcanically formed high plateau that is surrounded on three sides by a low-lying desert. The Ethiopian highlands have an average altitude of 2000 meters, with peaks to 4000 meters. This area has numerous rivers (of which the Blue Nile is the best known), lakes and valleys.
This high plateau is ideal for the cultivation of Carnations, growing Carnations at an altitude of 2,500 meters ensures a very intensive color. The climate is also favorable for growing Carnations.
EMF Carnations in Kenya since 2021
Most of the flowers grown in Kenya for export are grown in the regions surrounding Lake Naivasha. This is a unique freshwater lake in the hinterland of Naivasha, a town located approximately 90 km from the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Kenya's climate offers a combination of weather patterns that are ideal for growing Carnations.
EMF Carnations are grown indoors
EMF Carnations are grown indoors (in tunnels), on an area of 60 hectares, about 900 employees are employed.
EMF produces about 50 million stems per year, all of which are imported to the Netherlands. Processed in Aalsmeer by Alkemade International the Carnations are prepared for the auction process at Royal FloraHolland and direct sale.
The Carnation is a trendy product
In East Africa and the Netherlands, thorough quality control takes place and the flowering process is monitored in a flowering room. Due to innovations in breeding and shelf life, Carnations are highly appreciated by the market. The wide color palette and the many options make the Carnation a trendy product.
The EMF range consists of more than 80 varieties in various colors and is available in lengths from 45 to 70 cm. New varieties are added to the range every year, based on market wishes.
Expansion in Kenya and later in Ethiopia
Further expansion is currently underway in both countries.
This means that more standard carnations and spray carnations will be grown, all with year-round production and high quality. Rafine, Barbatus and Sole mio will also be grown there.
